Advancing APEC's Vision for a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP)
How can we address the serious challenges now facing the world’s rules-based trading system? Regional responses are required; that is, working together to create an economic region with a shared interest in driving greater prosperity. The Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) provides a practical way to advance this. Combined with APEC’s unique and useful mode of voluntary cooperation, the FTAAP can be a conceptual framework to tackle these regional challenges, and to advance integration, collaboration, and openness. How can we best take forward this FTAAP concept? This paper seeks to contribute to the discussion and foster mutual understanding on how to do so during China's 2026 APEC host year.
